A glycol chiller is an industrial refrigeration system that uses a mixture of glycol (an antifreeze agent) and water to lower the freezing point in refrigeration system applications.

A glycol chiller consists of refrigeration components and piping, with a glycol-water mixture used as the coolant inside the pipes. The coolant from the refrigeration unit is delivered through pipes connected to heat exchangers surrounding the heating processes. After absorbing the heat from the process, the warmed coolant returns to the refrigeration unit for cooling, and the cycle repeats.

Compared to using regular water as a coolant, using a glycol-water mixture offers several advantages. These advantages stem from its unique physical properties, including a lower freezing point than water.

Glycol is an organic alcohol compound known for its antifreeze properties. Its main feature is its excellent heat transfer capacity, making it especially effective in cooling and freezing applications. The glycol mixture in industrial chillers is able to quickly remove large amounts of heat, which is crucial for maintaining the stability of chemical processes. Due to its rapid heat transfer capabilities, glycol chillers are essential in applications requiring quick temperature control.

Although both substances are glycol compounds, they should not be mixed due to differences in fluid properties, toxicity, and heat transfer efficiency. Mixing them can lead to system failure or reduced efficiency.
