Why Laser Cutting Machine Need a Chiller?

Laser cutting machines are often used to cut a variety of materials. The production of automotive parts, circuit boards, medical equipment, bags and other products cannot be separated from it. Why should the laser cutting machine be equipped with an industrial chiller?

Why Do Laser Cutting Machines Generate So Much Heat?

When you use a magnifying glass to focus sunlight, you can light a piece of paper. The burning of the paper starts from a point because the heat at that point is very high. The principle of the laser cutting machine is very similar to this, but the laser has stronger energy and faster cutting speed. It uses a high-energy laser beam to achieve the purpose of cutting by melting, vaporizing or burning the material. The specific method used depends on the type of laser and the material.

Take cutting stainless steel as an example. Cutting stainless steel generally uses melting cutting, that is, heating the stainless steel above the melting point, letting it become liquid, and then blowing it away with gas, and the cutting is completed. The melting point of stainless steel is generally around 1300℃, which means that the laser beam needs to have very high energy when cutting to make the local area reach the melting point of stainless steel in a very short time.

Laser cutting machines heat materials to extremely high temperatures in seconds—that’s why they generate so much heat.

What Happens Without Proper Cooling?

Laser overheating-The laser cutting machine generates a lot of heat when running. If there is no chiller to cool it down in time, its temperature will rise rapidly. Continuous high temperature will not only accelerate the aging of the internal parts of the machine, but also shorten its service life.

Deterioration of cutting quality-The heat released by the laser cutting machine at the cutting point will be quickly transferred to the surrounding area. If the cooling is not assisted during cutting, the material will be thermally deformed and the cut will be rough.

Why DIY Cooling Is Not Enough?

You must have seen posts about using ice buckets and water pumps to cool laser cutting machines. It is tried by many people because of its low cost. It is true that it saves you money in the short term.

But what about in the long term?

Homemade cooling cannot quickly remove all the heat from the cutting machine, nor can it accurately control the cooling temperature. For some cutting processes that require continuous operation and strict temperature control accuracy, its cooling is far from enough.

Did you know? A new CO2 laser tube costs about $200 to $2,000. If the laser tube is frequently damaged due to untimely cooling, it will eventually become a consumable. Did you really save money?

How a Chiller Works for Laser Machines?

The laser chiller is connected to the laser cutting machine through two pipes, and the connection interface is usually on the cooling port on the back of the laser or on the casing. Once you set the target temperature on the chiller, the cooling system will start working as soon as the laser temperature rises. After the system starts, the chiller will compress the refrigerant and reduce the temperature of the coolant to the value you set.

The water pump will transport the coolant to the laser cutting machine through the pipe. The coolant flows through the laser or other components, absorbs heat, and returns to the evaporator of the chiller to be cooled again. This process is completed automatically. All you need to do is set the target temperature on the touch screen of the chiller.

How to Choose the Right Laser Chiller?

The cost of a chiller includes purchase cost, operating cost and maintenance cost

Laser type and workload-Different types of laser cutting machines have different cooling requirements. CO2 lasers are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so you need to ensure that the temperature control accuracy of the chiller is within ±0.3℃. Fiber lasers have high power and should be matched with a cooling system with large flow and strong cooling capacity. If your laser cutting machine works at least 8 hours a day, you must choose an industrial chiller with automatic alarm and stable constant temperature system.

Cooling capacity-The choice of chiller cooling capacity is related to the power of the laser, the use environment, the cutting material and the cutting frequency. The cooling capacity of the chiller system must be slightly greater than the actual demand, leaving redundancy for the system to avoid insufficient cooling capacity during high temperature, summer or high load operation. For example, if your 100w laser cutting machine has to run continuously for at least 8 hours a day, you should choose a chiller with a cooling capacity of more than 800w.

Environmental conditions-If the working environment temperature of the chiller is above 40℃, you’d better use a water-cooled chiller to avoid insufficient cooling at high temperatures. When the placement space is limited, you can choose an integrated chiller. If you want a chiller to cool two lasers at the same time, then a dual chiller with two channels controlled by one host is very suitable for you.The two channels can control two lasers separately without interfering with each other.

Smart control options-If you have many laser devices, you may need a chiller that supports remote control, remote alarm, PLC control, and RS485 communication protocol. Improving the degree of automation can greatly reduce your workload.

Warranty and support-If you want to get a timely temperature control solution, you have to choose a chiller supplier that can provide stable after-sales service. It is best to choose a company that can provide a one-year warranty and ISO, CE and other certifications.
