How to Test a New Chiller After Purchasing?

Regardless of the reason for your chiller purchase, the first step should always be testing. An industrial chiller is a complex device that includes modules such as a cooling system, a circulation system, and an electrical control system. Testing before it is officially put into use can lay the foundation for its long-term stable operation.

This article will show you:
• Why should you test a new chiller?
• How can you do it step by step?
• What details can help you determine whether a chiller is trustworthy?

Why Should You Test a New Chiller?

Chiller manufacturers will carefully test each chiller, so why do you still need to test it after receiving it?

A chiller must travel a long distance from the supplier’s facility to your site, which can lead to issues such as loose internal connections, dents, or refrigerant leakage during transit. Testing can help you discover these problems in advance.

There are differences in voltage frequency, ambient temperature, cooling water quality, etc. in different regions. Although the chiller supplier shows normal performance during testing, it may not be normal in your actual application. You need to simulate the actual process flow and test the chiller’s temperature control speed, accuracy, flow, pressure, etc. Avoid unexpected process downtime or losses caused by putting the chiller into direct use without verification.

Recording the data of the chiller in its initial state will also help you determine the cause of the failure during future maintenance.

How to Test a New Chiller?

You can test your new chiller by following the steps below.

1.Inspection Before Powering On

•Check whether the equipment is damaged or deformed during transportation, and whether the parts are loose
•Check whether the nameplate information is consistent with the model you purchased
•Ensure that the unit is compatible with your cooling fluid
•Confirm that the power supply matches the voltage and frequency requirements
•Some chiller systems that have been filled with refrigerant need to stand for more than 24 hours before powering on

2. Power on

•Turn on the power and do not start the compressor temporarily
•Observe whether the touch screen lights up and whether there is an error
•Check whether the initial parameters such as temperature and pressure are reasonable and should be close to room temperature
•Test whether the emergency stop and safety devices function properly

3. Fill coolant

•Fill slowly to avoid bubbles
•Observe whether the refrigerant and coolant liquid levels are normal
•If the equipment does not have an automatic exhaust function, you need to exhaust manually

4. Start the equipment

•Start the equipment with a low load or manual mode
•Observe whether the compressor, fan, pump, etc. are operating normally and whether the noise is at a normal level
•Whether the outlet water temperature is gradually approaching the set temperature
•Whether the VFD chiller is running without frequency hopping

5. Record data

After 30 to 60 minutes of operation, record key parameters such as inlet/outlet temperature, temperature stability, flow rate, pressure, noise, vibration, and any alarms.

6. Test communication control

•Test whether Modbus or Ethernet communication is normal
•Test whether remote control is normal

7. Full load test

•Simulate the actual application load for 1~2 hours to observe whether the equipment is stable and without faults or alarms.
•Test the response speed of the system when the load changes.

Conclusion

LNEYA chillers are all strictly tested before sales. However, we still recommend that you test the equipment after receiving it. This helps you identify potential risks early and ensures process stability and operational safety. We can provide free on-site commissioning, remote commissioning, and technical training services to help you quickly put it into use.
